The Inpatient Facility Coder is responsible for reviewing and accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and MS-DRG/APR-DRG codes to inpatient records for reimbursement, research, and compliance purposes. The coder ensures all diagnoses and procedures are coded according to official guidelines, hospital policies, and federal regulations, contributing to optimal reimbursement and quality reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review medical record documentation to accurately assign appropriate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient diagnoses and procedures.
  • Determine MS-DRG or APR-DRG groupings using appropriate grouper software.
  • Ensure coding is accurate, timely, and compliant with official coding guidelines, CMS rules, and payer requirements.
  • Query providers for clarification when documentation is ambiguous, conflicting, or incomplete.
  • Collaborate with clinical documentation improvement (CDI) specialists and coding auditors.
  • Respond to coding denials and participate in appeals when necessary.
  • Stay current with coding updates, regulatory changes, and industry best practices.
  • Maintain productivity and quality benchmarks as set by the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of inpatient coding experience required

  • Active AHIMA certification (RHIT, RHIA, or CCS preferred)

  • Strong knowledge of coding guidelines and documentation standards

  • Prior experience with EPIC and/or 3M 360 Encoder preferred

  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and analytical skills
